Investigation Launched into Alleged Gangrape and Murder of Teen in Hailakandi

Hailakandi, Aug 4: The police in Hailakandi have established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the tragic case involving the alleged gangrape and murder of a 15-year-old girl. Authorities have arrested three suspects, all under the age of 20, including a 16-year-old juvenile.
A formal complaint has been filed at the Katlicherra Police Station, leading to charges under Sections 65(1) and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as well as Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, based on an FIR submitted by the victim's mother.
The arrested individuals were presented before the District and Sessions Judge, who ordered their remand into judicial custody. Police officials indicated that they may seek police custody for further questioning as the investigation unfolds.
Forensic experts have also been dispatched to the crime scene to gather and analyze evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
The victim, a Class X student, was discovered critically injured at her home in Aloicherra village, approximately 36 km from Hailakandi town, on the night of August 1. Reports suggest that the incident occurred while her mother was attending a nearby function.
Upon returning home, the mother found her daughter severely injured and immediately alerted neighbors, who then contacted the police. Tragically, the teenager later succumbed to her injuries, and her body was sent to SK Roy Civil Hospital in Hailakandi for a post-mortem examination.
This incident has sparked significant outrage throughout the district. Following the recovery of the victim's body, local residents and students blocked National Highway 6 at Katlicherra, demanding severe punishment for the perpetrators.
The blockade was lifted after police assured demonstrators that prompt action would be taken regarding the case.
In the meantime, various student and social organizations have ramped up their calls for a swift investigation, harsh penalties for the accused, and the establishment of a fast-track court to ensure timely justice for the victim. Protest marches have been organized, and memoranda have been submitted to the Katlicherra Circle Officer urging for an expedited investigation and prosecution.
