Investigation Launched After Death of Man in Police Custody in Karnataka

In Vijayanagar, Karnataka, a 38-year-old man died while in police custody, prompting the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against the station officer and a constable. Authorities confirmed this information on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Khalilullah from Mehboobnagar.

Circumstances of the Arrest

A magistrate's inquiry is currently underway regarding the incident. Family members of the deceased allege that he suffered fatal injuries due to police brutality while in custody. According to police reports, Khalilullah's wife arrived at the police station around 1 AM on Saturday, claiming that her husband had assaulted her.

Details of the Incident

Based on her complaint, officers brought Khalilullah to the station for questioning around 1:30 AM. Family members assert that he was beaten by the station officer and a constable. Subsequently, he was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical staff.

Legal Actions Taken

District Superintendent of Police S. Jahnavi informed reporters that an FIR has been lodged against Station Officer Raghavendra and Constable Venkatesh under sections 103(1) (punishment for murder) and 118(2) (causing grievous hurt voluntarily by dangerous weapons) of the Indian Penal Code. The investigation has been assigned to the Deputy Superintendent of Police.

Ongoing Investigation

The police have conducted a post-mortem examination of the body, and a panel of doctors is investigating the case. The Superintendent of Police stated, 'The DSP is currently overseeing the investigation. CCTV footage and other evidence are being reviewed.' Further actions will be determined based on the findings of the investigation.
