Investigation Continues in Shocking Case of 15-Year-Old Girl Set on Fire in Puri
Ongoing Investigation into Disturbing Incident
Bhubaneswar: The Superintendent of Police for Puri, Pinak Mishra, reported on Saturday that the investigation into the horrific case of a 15-year-old girl who was set ablaze by assailants is progressing, although no significant leads have emerged yet.
During his visit to the Balanga police station, where the incident occurred on July 19, the SP stated, “The investigation is being conducted thoroughly, albeit it is a lengthy process. We are examining the case from multiple perspectives. A dedicated team is on the ground, ensuring that no stone is left unturned in gathering evidence. They are working tirelessly.”
When questioned about the victim's changing statements, the SP refrained from commenting, asserting, “It is premature to make any statements regarding that. However, I assure you that our investigation is proceeding appropriately.”
Initially handled by local authorities, the case has since been taken over by the Crime Branch, which is employing advanced scientific techniques to track down the individuals responsible for this heinous act.
According to the victim's mother, who filed a report at the Balanga Police Station, her daughter was abducted by three unidentified individuals and set on fire near the banks of the Bhargavi River on the morning of July 19.
Sources indicate that after limited success with the forensic evidence collected, the police are now focusing on a silver ring found at the crime scene.
Krushna Chandra Sahu, a jeweler from Balanga Bazaar, mentioned, “The police inquired about the silver ring, which was bought by one of the victim's female friends about two months ago. It was a male ring.”
In a recent update, Odisha's Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, who visited the victim and her family in Delhi, shared on X, “The young girl from Balanga is currently receiving treatment at AIIMS Delhi, having undergone two surgeries. Skin grafting is being facilitated using skin from the skin bank.”
She added, “The government is making all necessary arrangements for her care. I pray for her swift recovery and safe return home.”
This tragic incident has ignited widespread outrage across the nation. The girl, who suffered 75% burn injuries, was airlifted to AIIMS Delhi from AIIMS Bhubaneswar on July 20.
