Celebrating a Legacy

On Monday, Shimla hosted an International Professional Boxing Championship to honor the 93rd birth anniversary of the late Virbhadra Singh, a six-time Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. The event attracted nearly 50 male and female boxers from five nations, including India, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Thailand, and Sri Lanka.


A Gathering of Dignitaries

This championship, now in its third year, was graced by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Himachal Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania, and various senior Congress leaders, including Revenue and Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi.


Guiding Youth and Combating Drug Menace

Vikramaditya Singh, the Public Works and Urban Development Minister and son of Virbhadra Singh, emphasized the significance of sports in diverting youth from drug abuse and promoting healthier lifestyles. He stated, "Our goal is to guide the youth of Himachal Pradesh towards positive paths. This championship serves as a platform for international and local athletes, aiming to combat the drug issue in our state while continuing the developmental vision of my father."


Empowering Women in Boxing

The event also showcased the rising interest in professional boxing among women in India. Manisha Thakur, a professional boxer from Himachal Pradesh, expressed her enthusiasm about the championship, stating, "These tournaments allow us to demonstrate our skills and challenge stereotypes about women in boxing. With two international women's bouts scheduled, we hope to inspire more women to participate in this sport."


International Perspectives

Sri Lankan boxer Aasil Murajudeen shared his excitement about competing in India for the first time, saying, "The experience has been incredible. Competing in Shimla is a unique opportunity, and I look forward to facing Indian boxers. Boxing is gaining popularity in India, and events like this are historic for Sri Lanka."
