Punjab Congress Faces Internal Strife
Internal conflicts within the Punjab Congress became evident when former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi convened a meeting with his supporters in Morinda. Channi, who was considered a contender for the presidency of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), accepted the role of campaign committee chair after the Congress leadership decided to retain Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding as PCC president.
During the meeting, several leaders openly advocated for Channi to assume a top position within the state Congress. Congress leader Tarsem Singh DC stated that the party cannot form a government under Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding's leadership due to a lack of public support. Speaking to reporters, Tarsem Singh DC emphasized that the public wanted a change in the Punjab Congress presidency, favoring Channi as the next Chief Minister of Punjab.
Another leader, Harminder Singh Gill, highlighted the significant public backing for Channi, noting that upcoming elections in Punjab would see Channi as the preferred candidate. He refrained from commenting on Raja Wadding but reiterated that the public wishes to see Channi in a leading position. On Wednesday, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) announced key organizational appointments related to the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections as part of the party's campaign preparations, including the appointment of several committee chairs and co-chairs.
AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal issued a press release confirming that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge approved these appointments with immediate effect. Charanjit Singh Channi has been appointed as the chair of the campaign committee, Vijay Inder Singla as the chair of the election management and coordination committee, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa as the chair of the core committee, and Amar Singh as the head of the manifesto committee.
