Jorhat, August 2: A significant search effort was initiated in Assam's Jorhat district on Sunday following reports that a woman had jumped into the Bhogdoi River with her one-and-a-half-year-old child, both of whom are currently unaccounted for.

The incident occurred in the Salmora area of West Jorhat, with the missing individual identified as Krishnajyoti Bora, who lived in the Maloupam locality.

Authorities from the Jorhat Police arrived promptly to investigate the situation surrounding this tragic event.

"We were alerted around 9 am. Krishnajyoti Bora had been dealing with family issues for some time. As community members, we had often tried to mediate and resolve these conflicts. We believed things had improved, so this news has left us heartbroken," shared a local resident.

Witnesses reported that Bora entered the river with her child early on Sunday morning.

Members of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), along with local officials, commenced a thorough search operation shortly after the incident was reported.

"We received the alert around 9 am regarding a woman who had jumped into the river with her child. We quickly mobilized from Jorhat and began search efforts by 9:30 am. Given that it is the monsoon season, the river is swollen, and the current is quite strong. We are continuing our search, but unfortunately, we have not yet located them," stated an SDRF representative.

As news of the incident spread, concerned locals gathered along the riverbank at Salmora, watching as rescue teams scoured the turbulent waters of the Bhogdoi River.

The recent increase in the river's water level has complicated the search, with fears that the strong current may have carried the mother and child far downstream.

Authorities indicated that the precise details surrounding the incident will be clarified following the rescue operation and further investigation.

As of the latest updates, the search for the missing mother and her toddler is ongoing.
