Political Landscape Shifts in Upper Assam

Jorhat, March 5: The Indian National Congress (INC) has made a significant move by announcing that Gaurav Gogoi, the current president of the APCC and sitting MP from Jorhat, will be their candidate for the Jorhat Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC). This decision has heightened the political stakes in Upper Assam, promising an engaging electoral battle ahead.

Political analysts predict that the upcoming elections will mirror the intense competition seen during the 2024 elections for the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat, with a fierce contest expected between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the INC.

Since 2016, the Jorhat Assembly seat has been held by the BJP, with Hitendra Nath Goswami winning consecutively in 2021. Goswami previously served three terms starting in 1991 as a member of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and has a history of ministerial roles.

Gogoi's candidacy is anticipated to prompt the BJP to reassess its campaign strategy, particularly regarding candidate selection.

Despite the Jorhat district BJP's request for Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to run for the Jorhat Assembly seat, he has consistently expressed his disinterest in doing so.

Nonetheless, Sarma has been actively involved in the district, initiating various developmental projects and frequently visiting Jorhat, aiming to energize the campaign as he did during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Insiders from the Congress party are reportedly optimistic about Gogoi's nomination, although some observers caution that focusing on the Jorhat LAC may hinder his broader campaign efforts across the state.

According to sources within the Congress, there were seven contenders for the Jorhat ticket, including two women, with several candidates having engaged with local communities over the past few months.

Attention now turns to the BJP as they prepare to announce their candidate to challenge Gaurav Gogoi and retain the seat.

Additionally, Union Minister of State for Textiles and External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, has been actively engaging with constituents in the Jorhat HPC, particularly in the Jorhat LAC, attending various government events, which many view as a strategy to bolster the ruling party's position in the area.
