Intensified Security Operations in Jammu and Kashmir Following Police Officer's Murder

Comprehensive Crackdown on Terror Networks

In the wake of the daylight assassination of Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi in Anantnag's Lal Chowk, security agencies have launched an extensive offensive against the entire terror infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. Over 2,500 suspects were detained overnight, while controlled explosions were executed to demolish the homes of wanted Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists. This operation aims to dismantle the networks that support terrorism. Additionally, suspicious drone activities from Pakistan along the international border indicate ongoing conspiracies from across the border.

Destruction of Terrorists' Properties

Security forces targeted the ancestral homes of two wanted terrorists, Adil Ahmed Thokar and Haroon Rashid Ganai, in Anantnag and Bijbehara, using controlled explosions. Both individuals have been linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba since 2018. The operation took place after midnight, ensuring the safety of families before demolishing the structures. Notably, Thokar's residence had previously been destroyed following a severe terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025.

Widespread Detentions Across the Valley

Simultaneously, security forces have tightened their grip on individuals aiding terrorists, detaining over 2,500 people for questioning. Authorities suspect these individuals may have provided shelter, transportation, funding, communication, and other logistical support to terrorists. In Srinagar alone, around 700 suspects were apprehended, with additional detentions in Baramulla, Budgam, Ganderbal, Anantnag, Shopian, and Kulgam. The message from security agencies is clear: not only armed terrorists but also their collaborators will face legal consequences.

Response to the Cowardly Attack

This extensive operation was initiated following the brutal murder of 45-year-old Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi, who was on duty for the Amarnath Yatra. He was attacked in broad daylight on July 22 in Lal Chowk, Anantnag. The Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba's front organization, 'The Resistance Front,' claimed responsibility for this targeted killing. Security forces are actively searching for the fleeing terrorist involved in the attack.

Government's Assurance to the Martyr's Family

In the aftermath of the incident, Jammu and Kashmir's Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha convened a high-level security review meeting, instructing officials to remain vigilant and neutralize any emerging threats promptly. He also reviewed the security arrangements for the Amarnath Yatra and personally visited Budgam to meet with the family of the martyr, assuring them of the administration's unwavering support. Sinha promised that the family would receive all possible assistance until the martyr's son qualifies for a government job on compassionate grounds, emphasizing that the entire nation takes pride in the bravery of this police officer.

Political Reactions and Ongoing Threats

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed condolences to the martyr's family over the phone. During a visit to the martyr's home, BJP leader and opposition leader Sunil Sharma reassured the family that the central government stands firmly with them and that their sacrifice will never be forgotten. However, this stringent action by security agencies has drawn political criticism. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the mass arrests and demolitions as counterproductive, warning that public anger may shift from terrorists to the administration. Leaders like Sajjad Lone and Mehbooba Mufti have labeled it as collective punishment. Conversely, security agencies maintain that the backbone of terrorism is not just armed militants but their entire support network, which must be dismantled for lasting peace.

Increased Vigilance Along the Border

Meanwhile, Pakistan continues its nefarious activities, with reports of suspicious Pakistani drones near the international border in Samba and Kathua districts prompting the military and security forces to initiate extensive search operations. Following drone sightings in the Vijaypur area of Samba and the Hiranagar sector of Kathua, anti-drone systems were activated. Although it is suspected that the drone returned across the border, efforts to locate any potential dropped materials or evidence are ongoing. Given the rising drone activities, surveillance and monitoring along the international border have been significantly intensified.
