Intensified Political Activity in Northeast Ahead of Rajya Sabha Elections

As the Rajya Sabha elections draw near, political activity in the Northeast is intensifying. With four seats up for grabs, key players from Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh are emerging. The stakes are high, with each vote counting significantly. In Manipur, the focus is on whether former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh will accept a nomination, while Meghalaya's MDA 2.0 has rallied behind James Sangma. The Zoram People's Movement in Mizoram has announced its candidate, and Arunachal Pradesh sees a competitive selection process within the BJP. The elections are not just about seats; they reflect the political landscape's future in the region.

Guwahati, June 4: As the Rajya Sabha elections approach in less than two weeks, political dynamics in the Northeast are rapidly evolving.

Among the 24 seats that will become vacant across 10 states for the June 18 elections, four are located in the Northeast, specifically one each from Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh.

The significance of these seats is high; in such close contests, every vote is crucial, and the emergence of potential candidates sparks intense speculation.

Manipur: The Biren Singh Dilemma

In Manipur, the primary focus is not only on who will run for the Rajya Sabha seat but also on what this choice signifies for the state's political trajectory.

Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam reassured party members and observers on Thursday, stating that the election process is "on the right track" following the Election Commission's official notification.

"We will announce the candidate just before the deadline," he mentioned to the media when asked about the BJP's nominee for the seat currently held by Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba, whose term is nearing completion.

However, the name that is generating the most discussion is that of former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. Sources within the party indicate that discussions are ongoing regarding Singh, Manipur Pradesh BJP President A. Sharda Devi, and senior leader Premananda Sharma as potential candidates.

The more profound question troubling political circles is strategic: will Biren Singh accept a Rajya Sabha nomination, thereby stepping away from state politics and moving to New Delhi, or will he remain in Manipur in anticipation of the Assembly elections expected early next year? The forthcoming decision will have implications that extend beyond just one upper house seat.

MDA 2.0 Supports James Sangma

In Meghalaya, the situation is clearer. The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance 2.0 (MDA 2.0) has officially nominated National People's Party (NPP) leader James PK Sangma as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha election set for June 18.

This decision was made during a meeting of the parliamentary party leaders of the alliance's constituent partners, led by Chief Minister and MDA 2.0 leader Conrad K Sangma, on Wednesday.

Alliance leaders stated that all coalition partners unanimously agreed to support the NPP nominee, the largest member of the ruling alliance, in accordance with the established convention of MDA 2.0.

Although a few other leaders from the Garo-Jaintia Hills region were considered, the coalition appears to have reached a consensus on Sangma's candidacy.

Mizoram: ZPM Takes Initiative, MNF Considers Participation

The ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) has declared its candidate for the June 18 election - party spokesperson K. Laltluangkima. This announcement positions ZPM firmly in the race for the state's sole Rajya Sabha seat.

The opposition landscape, however, remains ambiguous. The Congress party, which holds only one seat in the 40-member Assembly, is expected to abstain from the election. Conversely, the Mizo National Front (MNF), the previous ruling party, is likely to field a candidate, creating a competitive scenario, although ZPM's numerical advantage in the Assembly makes the outcome challenging to contest.

Arunachal Pradesh: Competitive Selection Process

In Arunachal Pradesh, the selection process within the BJP has become notably competitive, with around 15 party members expressing interest in the state's lone Rajya Sabha seat.

State BJP president Kaling Moyong confirmed this development on Wednesday, stating that the selection process is ongoing and no candidate has been finalized yet. The party is expected to announce its nominee well ahead of the nomination deadline on June 8 at 3:00 pm.

Wider Context

On a national scale, 24 of the 27 Rajya Sabha seats announced by the Election Commission have become vacant due to the retirement of current members. These seats are distributed across Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand, in addition to the four northeastern states.

In the Northeast, however, these elections hold additional political weight, serving as a gauge of the strength, unity, and legislative strategy of the ruling parties and coalitions.

The Election Commission has established a strict timeline for the elections. The nomination process commenced on June 1, with the scrutiny of papers scheduled for June 9. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until June 11.

Voting is set to take place on June 18 from 8 am to 4 pm, with vote counting beginning at 5 pm on the same day.
