Intense Showdown Expected in West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026

Political Landscape Ahead of West Bengal Elections

The upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal are set to witness a fierce contest between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which aims to end TMC's long-standing rule. The TMC has been in power since 2011, while the BJP has steadily strengthened its position in recent years. In the 2016 assembly elections, the BJP secured only three seats. However, its performance saw a significant improvement in 2021, where it emerged as the main opposition party with 77 seats. A pivotal moment in the 2021 elections was when Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee in the Nandigram constituency. Following this defeat, Banerjee contested a by-election from Bhabanipur and won, maintaining her seat in the 294-member assembly.

Emergence of New Alliances

Meanwhile, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has entered the electoral fray by forming an alliance with the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), established by former TMC leader Humayun Kabir. This AIMIM-AJUP coalition is expected to influence the vote share in Muslim-majority constituencies. Despite the presence of smaller parties, this election is largely viewed as a direct contest between the TMC and BJP, setting the stage for a heated political battle in the state.

West Bengal Election Schedule 2026

Voting in West Bengal will take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with results to be announced on May 4. The first phase will include polling in Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, Birbhum, East and West Midnapore, Jalpaiguri, Malda, Murshidabad, North and South Dinajpur, West Bardhaman, Darjeeling, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, and Kalimpong. The second phase will cover East Bardhaman, Nadia, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, and Kolkata.
