High-Stakes Electoral Battle in Khowang

Dibrugarh, March 26: The electoral landscape in the Khowang Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC) is evolving into a fiercely contested arena, attracting considerable political focus throughout Upper Assam.

At the forefront of this contest is Lurinjyoti Gogoi, the president of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and the candidate from the opposition alliance, who aims to dethrone the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Chakradhar Gogoi, who has served two terms.

The dynamics of the race have become more intricate with the candidacy of former Congress member Biju Dowerah as an independent, alongside Dr. Prabhakar Das, a pathologist-turned-social worker making his first electoral attempt.

Their participation has introduced new dimensions of local issues, identity politics, and grassroots mobilization to what was initially perceived as a straightforward contest between the BJP and the opposition.

The BJP, which has maintained control over the constituency for the last decade, is banking on its robust grassroots network and the incumbent's ongoing engagement with the electorate.

Chakradhar Gogoi, who has represented Khowang for two consecutive terms, emphasizes development as the cornerstone of his campaign. He argues that advancements in infrastructure, public services, and welfare initiatives have solidified the party's bond with voters under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

“Voters will prioritize development,” the incumbent has claimed during his outreach efforts.

Conversely, the AJP is attempting to leverage what it perceives as increasing dissatisfaction with the current MLA. Party officials highlight sporadic opposition in various parts of the constituency in recent months, indicating a potential anti-incumbency sentiment.

The party is working to consolidate this sentiment while emphasizing regional identity issues.

Lurinjyoti Gogoi's candidacy has bolstered the opposition's campaign. A notable regional figure, he previously contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Dibrugarh as part of an opposition coalition but was defeated by senior BJP leader Sarbananda Sonowal.

Despite this setback, the AJP remains hopeful, citing positive performance in several segments of the Khowang area during the parliamentary elections.

Meanwhile, Biju Dowerah's independent candidacy has introduced a compelling local-versus-non-local narrative into the race. After a brief stint with the Raijor Dal, where he sought a party ticket, Dowerah departed due to disagreements over candidacy.

He is now campaigning under the slogan “Chalani Hatao, Local Bachao” (Remove non-natives, protect locals), advocating for the election of a local representative. His campaign also aims to resonate with segments of the traditional support base of the Indian National Congress by appealing to regional sentiments.

Adding another layer to the contest is Dr. Prabhakar Das, who is supported by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and a faction led by Rejan Horo from the All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA).

Renowned for his grassroots initiatives in health and education within tea garden communities and rural Assam, Dr. Das is striving to convert his social work into political engagement.

It is noteworthy that the Khowang LAC was previously known as the Moran constituency and was officially renamed in 2023 following a delimitation process.
