Final Nomination Day in Dhubri

Dhubri, Mar 23: The last day for filing nominations for the Assam Legislative Assembly elections saw a flurry of political activity in Dhubri town on Monday, as candidates from various parties and Independents flocked to the District Commissioner's office.

Candidates representing five Assembly constituencies—6-Golakganj, 7-Gauripur, 8-Dhubri, 9-Birsing Jarua, and 10-Bilasipara—submitted their nomination papers on this final day.

Most candidates opted to finalize their nominations on Monday, making it the busiest day of the nomination period.

The streets were filled with thousands of supporters accompanying the candidates, particularly along G.T.B. Road, leading to significant traffic disruptions for several hours.

In notable developments, Congress candidate Bebi Begum from Dhubri filed her nomination and expressed optimism about her chances of winning, asserting that neither the BJP nor the AIUDF would play a decisive role in the constituency while criticizing both parties.

In Golakganj, Congress candidate Kartik Roy submitted his nomination amid a large procession, showcasing his ground strength.

Wazed Ali Choudhury, the Congress nominee from Birsing Jarua, also completed his nomination process.

From the BJP, candidates Uttam Prasad (Dhubri), Madhabi Das (Birsing Jarua), and Ashwini Kumar Roy (Golakganj) filed their nominations, with Madhabi Das criticizing her Congress rival Wazed Ali Choudhury after her submission.

AIUDF candidates were also active, with Nazrul Haque filing his nomination from Dhubri and criticizing Congress's Bebi Begum, while suggesting that the AIUDF might support Congress in forming a government if necessary.

In Gauripur, AIUDF candidate Nijanur Rahman expressed confidence in his victory. Sabana Akhtara from Bilasipara and Ali Akbar Mia from Birsing Jarua also filed their nominations.

Gauripur saw significant activity with Raijor Dal candidate Abul Miya filing his papers after a rally, while AGP candidate Mehtabul Haque also submitted his nomination.

In Bilasipara, Independent candidate Sheikh Hedayatullah joined the race, and AGP candidate Jibesh Roy, contesting as part of the AGP-BJP alliance, also filed his nomination. Roy is currently the Chief Executive Member of the Kamatapur Autonomous Council.

Adding a new dimension to the contest, Independent candidate Dr. Reza Amin from Birsing Jarua, a former senior AIUDF member, filed his nomination and sharply criticized the party leadership, labeling AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal a 'betrayer' and pledging to politically challenge the party in Dhubri.

Official estimates indicate that 1,220,384 voters across the five Assembly constituencies in the district will cast their votes at 1,548 polling stations on April 9.

With the nomination process concluded, the political landscape in Dhubri district is poised for an intense contest, with multi-cornered battles anticipated across all five constituencies.
