Political Tensions Rise Over Nuclear Energy in Odisha

On August 7, Bhubaneswar witnessed a heated exchange between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) regarding the establishment of a nuclear power plant in Odisha. This topic was initially raised by the BJD two days prior, coinciding with a meeting between corporate representatives and the state's Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister, K. V. Singh Deo.

Details of the discussions held between the company officials and the Deputy Chief Minister have not yet been disclosed. BJD's senior general secretary, Lekhashree Samantsinghar, stated that her party would strongly oppose any such initiatives by the state government. She accused the government of prioritizing corporate interests over public safety and health.

Samantsinghar expressed, “The establishment of a nuclear power plant in Odisha poses a serious threat to the health and safety of the people.” She claimed that a private company has proposed a nuclear power plant with a capacity of 3,000 megawatts in the state. In response, the ruling BJP accused the BJD of misleading the public regarding the term 'nuclear.' Anil Biswal, spokesperson for the BJP's Odisha unit, remarked, “The BJD and Congress are misusing the term 'nuclear' to confuse the populace.”

Biswal further questioned, “What harm has nuclear power plants caused to people in Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh?” He asserted that nuclear power plants do not adversely affect the safety and well-being of the public.
