Intense Cold Wave Grips Himachal Pradesh with Record Low Temperatures
Cold Wave Continues in Himachal Pradesh
The cold wave persists in Himachal Pradesh, with Solan experiencing lower temperatures than Shimla, indicating a significant drop in winter conditions across the region. Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 1.5°C, while Solan fell to a chilling -1.1°C, making it the coldest area compared to the state capital.
Weather reports indicate that temperatures dipped below zero in nine locations, with two others near freezing. Tabo was the coldest at -9.4°C, followed by Kukumsheri at -9.2°C, Kalpa at -5.2°C, Narkanda at -2.9°C, and Reckong Peo at -2°C.
Other notable low temperatures included Manali at -1.4°C, Kufri at -1.3°C, and Seobagh at -0.5°C. The mid and lower hill regions are also experiencing severe cold, with minimum temperatures remaining below 10°C throughout the state.
Impact of Snowfall and Fog
Recent snowfall in areas like Rohtang, Solang Nullah, and Pangi has exacerbated the cold wave, particularly in tribal regions. Dense fog was reported in Bilaspur, moderate fog in Paonta Sahib, and light fog in Una, which has affected visibility during the mornings.
Despite the cold, bright sunshine was observed in Shimla and other parts of the state on Wednesday, providing some daytime relief.
Weather Forecast and Alerts
The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has predicted clear weather across Himachal until January 13. However, a yellow alert for dense fog has been issued for Bilaspur, Una, Mandi, Hamirpur, Kangra, Solan, and Sirmaur during morning and evening hours until January 11.
Additionally, a yellow alert for cold wave conditions is in effect for certain areas on January 7 and 8. Officials have stated that no significant changes in minimum temperatures are expected over the next 48 hours, but a gradual increase of 2–4°C is anticipated in the following days.
Rare Sub-Zero Day Temperature in Tabo
In an unusual occurrence, Tabo recorded a maximum temperature below zero on Tuesday, with the mercury at -0.1°C. Other day temperatures remained low but stable, with Shimla at 12.4°C, Manali at 9.8°C, Kalpa at 6.4°C, Dharamshala at 17.1°C, and Solan at 18.5°C.
Meanwhile, the declining water levels in the Ravi river have resulted in the suspension of power generation at two hydroelectric projects in Chamba’s Holi.
