Intense Clash Between Security Forces and Maoists in Chhattisgarh
Fierce Encounter in Bijapur District
Raipur/Bijapur, Feb 5: Security personnel in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh faced off against armed Maoists in a significant encounter on Thursday, underscoring the ongoing battle against left-wing extremism in the Bastar region.
The operation was initiated following credible intelligence regarding the presence of Maoist groups in the South Bijapur area.
Joint forces, including members of the District Reserve Guard and specialized units, commenced a search operation that resulted in intermittent gunfire starting around 7:30 a.m.
The firefight persisted for several hours as security forces advanced through the difficult terrain.
As the day unfolded, officials reported the recovery of a deceased Maoist along with an AK-47 rifle from the site of the clash.
Local sources indicated that additional Naxalites, including a commander and a member of the Divisional Committee, may have also been killed, though officials are awaiting confirmation.
The Superintendent of Police in Bijapur stated that a detailed report would be made available once the operation concludes and all facts are verified.
A significant number of security personnel remain stationed in the area to maintain security and continue their search efforts.
This encounter is part of a broader initiative to enhance "anti-Naxal" operations throughout Chhattisgarh, where security forces have recorded considerable successes in recent months through direct confrontations and rehabilitation efforts.
Authorities confirmed that operations will continue until the area is completely secured, with further updates anticipated soon as teams establish their positions in the forest.
In a separate but related event on the same day in Bijapur, armed Maoists are set to formally join the mainstream society.
As part of the state government's 'Poona Margem: Rehabilitation to Rejuvenation' initiative, several Maoists have chosen to surrender and reintegrate, showcasing a dual approach of enforcement and dialogue to tackle the insurgency.
The 'Poona Margem' program has successfully encouraged many cadres to surrender recently across the Bastar districts, providing pathways to normalcy through financial assistance, skill development, and other support services. Authorities are expected to release details about those who will surrender on Thursday.
