Instagram Faces Global Outage: Users Struggle with Messaging and Profile Access
Widespread Instagram Disruption Hits Users
On Wednesday evening, Instagram, owned by Meta, experienced a significant service outage that left numerous users unable to utilize essential features such as messaging, profile loading, and content updates.
Data from outage monitoring service Downdetector indicated a sharp increase in user reports of issues during the evening hours.
At approximately 7:13 p.m., complaints surged to 1,993, a notable rise from the 436 reports logged just an hour prior.
By 7:44 p.m., the number of reported problems had escalated to nearly 3,706, suggesting a broader impact.
The majority of affected users encountered difficulties with the Instagram mobile app, with around 61% of complaints related to app issues.
Additionally, 19% of users reported server-related problems, while 11% faced challenges accessing the website.
Users expressed frustration over their inability to send or receive direct messages, with others experiencing blank screens, incorrect profile loading, and messaging inboxes that failed to refresh properly.
According to technology outlet Android Authority, the outage seemed to be global, with users from various U.S. cities, including New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, and Atlanta, reporting similar difficulties.
The disruption may have also impacted other Meta platforms, as monitoring service StatusGator noted that some users encountered loading issues and error messages on Facebook during the same timeframe.
Despite the rising number of complaints, Meta had yet to officially recognize the outage.
The company's business status dashboard continued to show 'No known issues' across critical platform metrics, and there is no public consumer service status page available.
Cybersecurity experts have cautioned users against repeatedly resetting their passwords or clicking on account recovery links received via SMS or email until Meta resolves the server issues, as such disruptions can be exploited by cybercriminals through phishing schemes.
