Sustainable Development Week Kicks Off in Sanawadiya Village


A remarkable initiative aimed at sustainable development has been launched in Sanawadiya village, Indore. To commemorate the 15th death anniversary of the late Jimmy Magilligan, the 'Jimmy and Janak Magilligan Foundation for Sustainable Development' is hosting a Sustainable Development Week from April 15 to 21. The week commenced with a Solar Cooking Food Festival, which beautifully conveyed messages of environmental conservation and community participation.


Spiritual and Cultural Atmosphere at the Inauguration

The event began in a serene and spiritual setting at Giridarshan. The atmosphere was enriched by prayers from Gurukul disciples and collective prayers, creating a peaceful and positive environment. Trustee Veerendra Goyal welcomed all guests with the chanting of 'Om'.


Exciting Participation in Solar Cooking Festival

A highlight of the event was the Solar Cooking Festival, which saw enthusiastic participation from individuals across Indore, Mahu, and nearby villages. The Giridarshan premises were adorned with solar cookers, and around 30 to 35 participants received training in solar cooking. For many, this was their first experience, providing them with an opportunity to connect with new technology.


Diverse Dishes Prepared Using Solar Cookers

During the event, over 15 different dishes were prepared using solar cookers, including kadhi, idli, pulao, khichdi, kheer, cake, and rabdi. Participants enjoyed these dishes made with organic millets and mulberry jam, transforming the event into a festive celebration.


Expert Insights on Solar Energy

Renowned experts were present at the event, including solar engineer Deepak Gadhiya, solar cooking specialist Dr. Ajay Chandak, and Dr. Yogesh Goswami, Vice-Chancellor of Shri Vaishnav Vidyapeeth University. They emphasized the importance of solar energy and its potential to meet growing energy demands, stating that solar energy is a sustainable solution that needs to be embraced.


Legacy of Jimmy Magilligan in Solar Technology

The experts also highlighted that the late Jimmy Magilligan was a significant innovator in solar technology, having developed various types of solar cookers and kitchens. Despite lacking the necessary government support, Padma Shri Dr. Janak Palta Magilligan continues to advance this mission and engage youth in solar initiatives.


Hands-On Training and Demonstrations

The event featured demonstrations of solar panels and various solar devices. Participants received hands-on training in solar cooking, allowing them to gain practical experience.


Personal Experiences Shared by Participants

One participant, Nitya, shared her experience of making tamarind pulao in a solar cooker, describing it as a special and magical experience. She noted that the event was not just about cooking but also a means of learning, connecting, and sharing joy.


Gratitude and Future Sessions

At the conclusion of the program, trustee Anuradha Dubey expressed gratitude to all guests and participants. She mentioned that throughout the week, various sessions would be held on topics such as solar innovation, water conservation, organic lifestyles, and the role of universities in promoting a green India.
