Inspiring Recovery: Migrant Worker Overcomes Life-Threatening Illness After Complex Surgery

A Remarkable Journey of Healing
Bhubaneswar: A 27-year-old migrant worker from Berhampur has triumphed over adversity after receiving critical medical care at Manipal Hospitals in Bhubaneswar. Rohit (name changed), who relocated to Qatar in search of better opportunities, began suffering from intense abdominal pain just three months into his employment.
He was diagnosed with necrotizing pancreatitis and a pseudoaneurysm, both of which are serious conditions that necessitated a six-month hospitalization in Qatar.
As his health deteriorated, Rohit fell into a coma for three months, undergoing several surgeries, including the removal of a portion of his pancreas and colon. He became dependent on a tracheostomy, feeding tube, and stoma. With his insurance running out, his family decided to bring him back to India for further medical assistance.
After facing challenges with treatments at various hospitals in Bhubaneswar, Rohit was referred to Manipal Hospitals, where consultant Jyotirmay Jena and his team accepted the difficult case. Jena executed a complex, single-stage surgery aimed at restoring Rohit’s health.
The surgical procedure involved closing the gastrostomy, excising necrotic tissue, controlling internal bleeding, and reconnecting the intestines, all while reconstructing his abdominal wall to enhance mobility.
Remarkably, just six weeks post-surgery, Rohit is no longer in danger and is regaining his strength, even gearing up to return to work—a feat that seemed unattainable just months prior.
Saktimaya Mohapatra, the hospital director, remarked, “This case highlights the expertise and empathy of our team in managing intricate gastrointestinal issues, not only saving lives but also restoring the livelihoods of migrant workers like Rohit.
