Defying Age: The Triumph of Two Senior Athletes
Two remarkable athletes from Una, Himachal Pradesh, are proving that age is just a number when it comes to pursuing one's passion. Om Prakash Sharma, aged 70, and Ajit Singh, 65, continue to compete and excel in athletics, showcasing their unwavering determination.
Recently, they returned from the World Masters Athletics Games in New Taipei City, China, where they proudly brought home four silver medals. Competing in the 70+ and 65+ age categories respectively, they not only represented India but also made their district proud with their achievements.
However, their journey to success was not without challenges. Both athletes had to cover all their expenses, including travel and accommodation, without any support from government or sports organizations. Their accomplishments, while celebrated by friends and family, largely went unnoticed by official entities.
Om Prakash Sharma shared, "I financed the entire trip myself, but standing on the podium with the Indian flag was worth every effort. It was an emotional moment." He encourages the youth to steer clear of drugs and engage in sports, which he believes foster a healthy lifestyle and a sense of pride.
Ajit Singh, who began his athletic journey post-retirement, echoed similar sentiments. "In just eight years, I transitioned from a novice to an international medallist. The feeling of achievement is unparalleled, yet it’s disheartening to see a lack of recognition from our institutions," he remarked.
Both athletes advocate that sports should be embraced by individuals of all ages, emphasizing that pursuing one's passion should never be hindered by age. They believe that regular physical activity is essential for maintaining mental and physical agility, a message that resonates strongly in today's society.
