A Remarkable Story of Resilience

At just eight years old, Payal Nag faced a life-changing incident that resulted in the loss of all four limbs. Born to a daily-wage mason in Odisha, her circumstances seemed dire. Yet, through unwavering determination, she has emerged as a beacon of hope in Indian sports, particularly in para archery.

Historic Victory in Bangkok

Recently, Payal achieved a significant milestone by winning a gold medal at the World Para Archery Series held in Bangkok. In a thrilling final, she triumphed over her idol and reigning world champion, Sheetal Devi, with a score of 139-136. This event marked her debut in senior international competitions, where she showcased exceptional poise.

The Journey into Archery

Payal's entry into the world of archery was quite unique. Her talent was discovered by coach Kuldeep Vedwan, who also trained Sheetal Devi. Recognizing her potential, he invited her to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Archery Academy in Katra, where she began training with a specially adapted bow. This academy played a crucial role in her development, offering not just coaching but vital support.

Celebrating Success and Gratitude

Earlier this week, Payal also secured a gold medal in the women's compound team event alongside Sheetal Devi, leading India to a victory over Kazakhstan with a score of 150-147.

In an interview in Katra, while proudly displaying her gold medals, Payal expressed her gratitude, stating, "I practice at the Sri Mata Vaishno Devi Archery Academy, where I learned to handle a bow and arrow. This is where my archery journey began."

"I owe my success to my coaches and the Shrine Board, which provided me with a wheelchair that enabled me to compete in Thailand. They have supported us with food, accommodation, and equipment. I am thankful to the Shrine Board and had the opportunity to meet with the LG, Manoj Sinha," she added.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Archery Academy: A Talent Nurturing Hub

Archery coach Abhilasha Chaudhary emphasized the academy's role in fostering talent, stating, "I have been coaching at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Archery Academy since 2017. It boasts the best infrastructure in J&K, and every year, it produces new stars in archery for the country."

"Our academy has two Arjun Awardees and over 70 international medals. The Shrine Board has made a significant impact on the global sports map, being the only religious institution in India contributing so much to athletics," she concluded.
