INS Mahendragiri Commissioned into Indian Navy

On Saturday, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh officially inducted the INS Mahendragiri into the Indian Navy at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam. This vessel is the sixth stealth frigate of the Project 17A Nilgiri-class, marking a significant advancement in India's indigenous defense capabilities and maritime security. The event was attended by senior naval officials, including Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, who also presented a guard of honor to Singh. Named after the Mahendragiri mountain range in the Eastern Ghats, INS Mahendragiri is the first Indian naval warship to carry this name. According to the Navy, this frigate symbolizes strength, power, and unwavering resolve, and it is anticipated to add a notable chapter to India's maritime history.

Prior to the commissioning ceremony, Rajnath Singh arrived in Visakhapatnam on Friday evening, where he was welcomed by Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan. Singh described the commissioning as a moment of pride for the nation and the Indian Navy. In a post on social media, he stated, "I am heading to Visakhapatnam to witness a moment of pride for our country and the Indian Navy, where the commissioning ceremony of the sixth Project 17A stealth frigate, 'Mahendragiri', will take place on July 11, 2026." He emphasized that this advanced warship, designed and built in India, is a testament to the country's growing self-reliance in defense manufacturing. Singh further noted that Mahendragiri is prepared to safeguard India's maritime interests and strengthen the commitment to a secure Indo-Pacific.

INS Mahendragiri's Design and Construction

Designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai, this warship is the sixth vessel under the Project 17A program. This initiative showcases India's growing expertise in designing and building advanced warships using indigenous technology and manufacturing capabilities. With over 75 percent of its components sourced locally, INS Mahendragiri exemplifies the success of the government's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative. A vast network of Indian industries, including MSMEs, contributed to the ship's construction, bolstering the domestic defense manufacturing ecosystem and creating job opportunities across the country.


Significance of INS Mahendragiri

This stealth frigate is equipped with advanced indigenous weapons, sensors, and electronic warfare systems, enabling it to conduct anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare operations. Beyond combat roles, the ship is capable of maritime security missions, search and rescue operations, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief (HADR), as well as being deployed for extended periods in the Indian Ocean region and beyond. The induction of INS Mahendragiri is expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy, further solidifying India's position as a leading nation in indigenous warship construction. As more Project 17A frigates join the fleet, the Navy's combat readiness and strategic reach are anticipated to strengthen.
