In the Karsog subdivision of Mandi district, a farmer has successfully revitalized his previously unproductive land by implementing solar-powered irrigation and modern agricultural techniques. This shift has led to a remarkable increase in productivity, allowing his family to earn an annual income of up to ₹4 lakh.

Chhajju Ram Verma, who cultivates approximately 25 bighas of land, faced significant challenges due to water scarcity. His farming practices were heavily reliant on rainfall, which restricted crop variety and resulted in poor yields. Consequently, much of his land remained uncultivated due to unreliable irrigation.

The turning point came with the installation of a solar power system, which facilitated the use of irrigation pumps and ensured a consistent water supply for his crops. With dependable irrigation, Chhajju Ram expanded his cultivation efforts and began focusing on high-value crops.

Currently, his fields yield a diverse range of seasonal vegetables such as peas, tomatoes, capsicum, and green chillies. Additionally, he has established a plum orchard, further diversifying his income sources and enhancing the sustainability of his farming operations.

The advancements in irrigation and crop management have led to a significant rise in productivity. Chhajju Ram reports that his farm now generates an annual income of around ₹3 to ₹4 lakh, a stark contrast to previous years when earnings were unpredictable and heavily reliant on monsoon rains.

This transformation has not only bolstered the family's financial situation but has also allowed them to prioritize education and future prospects for their children. Chhajju Ram emphasizes that reliable irrigation has made farming more stable and economically viable.

Agricultural experts highlight that integrating renewable energy into farming practices is becoming a viable solution for farmers in water-scarce regions, especially in hilly areas where access to electricity and irrigation infrastructure is often limited.

Chhajju Ram’s experience illustrates how embracing innovative solutions and diverse cropping strategies can empower farmers to convert challenging circumstances into sustainable livelihoods.

The solar power system on his farm was made possible through a government assistance program, which subsidized a significant portion of the installation costs, making this technology accessible to small-scale farmers.
