Introduction of Tinka Jail Pathshala
New Delhi. The Tinka Tinka Foundation has initiated a groundbreaking educational program called 'Tinka Jail Pathshala', aimed at providing recorded master classes to inmates across Indian prisons. This initiative will deliver lessons in both Hindi and English through prison-approved systems.
Purpose of the Initiative
According to Professor Vartika Nanda, who is instrumental in this project, the Tinka Jail Pathshala aims to utilize the idle time of prisoners by filling it with education and knowledge. The program will create content that inmates can directly apply in their daily prison life, whether for exam preparation or personal development. Professor Nanda heads the Journalism Department at Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University.
Vision for Reform
Professor K.G. Suresh emphasized that prisons should serve as reformative institutions. He stated that merely offering vocational courses is insufficient; inmates should also learn about ethics, values, personality development, time management, and life skills. He views Professor Nanda's initiative as a significant step in this direction.
Background of the Initiative
Previously, Professor Suresh has served as the Director General of IIMC and Vice Chancellor of Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication.
Need for Tinka Jail Pathshala
During the operation of Tinka Jail Radio in various prisons, a consistent decline in learning among inmates was observed. Much of the available educational material is limited in scope and often unrelated to what inmates genuinely wish to learn. In Indian prisons, inmates largely depend on the printed materials provided to them. While many have attempted to pursue school or university education during their incarceration, access to organized, comprehensible, and contemporary teaching materials remains uneven. Although Tinka Jail Pathshala was already operational in some prisons during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has now been decided to advance it as a unique initiative.
Focus Areas of the Program
The programming will concentrate on areas not included in formal prison curricula but essential for the overall well-being of inmates. Topics will encompass education, infotainment, general awareness, time management, mental health, music, addiction recovery, self-help, skill acquisition, and motivational stories. Future subjects will be expanded based on suggestions from the prisons.
Production Center and Initial Episodes
The Dehradun District Jail has been selected as the production center for this initiative. Dadhiram Maurya, DIG of Uttarakhand, and Jailor Pawan Kothari have approved this project. The editing of the initial episodes will be conducted by Dr. Suchit Narang, a former inmate of this jail and the main radio jockey for the jail radio.
Objectives of the Pathshala
This initiative is based on a public service model aimed at informing, educating, and entertaining. The foundation will collaborate with selected content creators, educators, experts, and students to develop lessons based on the needs identified through the experiences of inmates. Each session will be designed in small, accessible formats according to prison schedules. Tinka Jail Pathshala will create a repository of need-based content specifically tailored for prison conditions. The material will be disseminated through prison authorities, jail radio, and the TTF YouTube channel.
Background of Tinka Tinka
Tinka Tinka's jail radio was launched on July 31, 2019, at the Agra District Jail, establishing a unique public service broadcasting model in Indian prisons. It laid the foundation for India's first jail podcast series, Tinka Jail Radio, in 2020. The National Book Trust is set to publish 'Radio in Prison' in 2024, authored by Professor Vartika Nanda. This book is the only one in the country focused on jail radio. Additionally, three other books published by TTF are considered authentic documents on prison life.
