Injury Woes for Indian Cricket Team Ahead of Sri Lanka Test Series

Sai Sudharsan Ruled Out of Test Series

Indian left-handed batsman Sai Sudharsan has been officially ruled out of the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka due to an injury, as confirmed by a source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Sudharsan has been undergoing rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru, where he participated in various batting and fielding drills. Unfortunately, he is not expected to achieve full fitness in time for the first Test, which is set to commence in Galle on August 15.

Absence from Warm-Up Match

Sudharsan did not board the flight with the Indian team to Sri Lanka, resulting in his absence from the ongoing three-day warm-up match against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo, which started on August 8.

Injury Concerns for Team India

In addition to Sudharsan, Indian captain Shubman Gill has also suffered an injury to his right ring finger during a practice session prior to the first Test. This injury poses a significant setback for the team, and Gill is currently under observation by the BCCI medical staff. As a precaution, he will miss Day 1 of the warm-up match against the SLC XI, with KL Rahul stepping in as captain during his absence.

The BCCI provided an update on social media, stating, "Captain Shubman Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during India's practice on Thursday. As a precautionary measure, he will not take the field on Day 1 of the warm-up game against SLC XI. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress. KL Rahul will lead the team in Gill's absence."

Jasprit Bumrah and Other Injuries

Star bowler Jasprit Bumrah has also been ruled out of the series due to an incomplete recovery from a left knee injury sustained during the ODI series against England. Aquib Nabi has been named as his replacement in the squad.

India is facing multiple injury issues ahead of the series, with Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy out due to hamstring and quadriceps injuries, respectively. Washington Sundar will miss the opening Test due to a hamstring problem, while Akash Deep is unavailable as he continues to recover from stress reactions in his back.

World Test Championship Implications

This series is part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. Currently, India, under the leadership of Shubman Gill, sits fifth in the World Test Championship standings, having achieved four victories and four losses in nine matches, resulting in a Points Percentage (PCT) of 48.150.
