Vilnius, June 23: Inga Ruginiene has officially resigned from her position as Lithuania's Prime Minister after serving for just over nine months. The final meeting of her cabinet took place on Tuesday, where all ministers unanimously agreed to a resolution regarding their resignation, as reported by local media.
During this meeting, Ruginiene expressed, "Despite the challenges we faced, there is much to be proud of, and each of you has significantly contributed to our nation's welfare and the betterment of our citizens' lives."
She further stated, "Today, we have decided to resign and return the government's authority to the President of the Republic."
After the meeting, Ruginiene reflected on her tenure while speaking to reporters, according to the Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT.
She remarked, "In politics, one can learn various skills—how to present oneself well, how to communicate effectively—but qualities like courage and humanity cannot be taught." She emphasized that empathy, active listening, and the courage to make tough decisions were essential traits that guided her through challenging times.
Ruginiene acknowledged that her non-traditional approach may have unsettled some, as she did not conform to the typical image of a prime minister in terms of appearance or behavior. However, she maintained that she never subscribed to the notion that a leader should conform to a pre-defined mold.
Addressing rumors of being sacrificed by her party, Ruginiene clarified that the transition was a standard political procedure, as reported by LRT.
The resignation resolution will be submitted to President Gitanas Nauseda on Tuesday. The President is expected to request the outgoing cabinet to serve in a caretaker role until a new government is established. According to the coalition agreement, the President must propose a new Prime Minister to parliament within 15 days. Mindaugas Sinkevicius, the leader of the Social Democrats, has been nominated for the position.
Once parliament approves the new Prime Minister, they will have an additional 15 days to present a cabinet and government program for parliamentary approval. The new ruling coalition comprises the Union of Democrats "For Lithuania", the Social Democrats, and the Lithuanian Farmers, Greens, and Christian Families Union.
As per the coalition agreement, at least four ministerial positions will see new leadership, with the Democrats taking over agriculture, energy, and health ministries, while the Social Democrats will manage the environment ministry. Ruginiene is anticipated to assume the role of Minister of Social Security and Labour in the upcoming cabinet.
Before becoming Prime Minister in September 2025, Inga Ruginiene held the position of Minister of Social Security and Labour in the previous government. She has a wealth of leadership experience, having served as President of the Lithuanian Trade Union Confederation, Vice President of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), Vice President of the International Trade Union Confederation - European Region (ITUC-PERC), and Chairperson of the Lithuanian Federation of Trade Unions of the Forest and Forest Industry. Additionally, she has been a Member of Lithuania's Parliament (Seimas) since 2024.
