IndiGo's New Fuel Charges Amid Rising Jet Fuel Prices

New Delhi: Starting March 14, IndiGo will implement fuel charges ranging from Rs 425 to Rs 2,300 on both domestic and international flights due to a significant rise in jet fuel prices linked to the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran.

This adjustment is expected to raise airfare costs.

For flights within India and the surrounding region, the fuel surcharge will be set at Rs 425. For services to the Middle East, the charge will be Rs 900, while flights to South East Asia, China, Africa, and West Asia will incur a fee of Rs 1,800. Passengers traveling to Europe will face the highest surcharge of Rs 2,300.

Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) constitutes nearly 40% of an airline's operational expenses.

IndiGo explained that this decision was made in response to the dramatic increase in fuel prices driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The airline noted, "While fully absorbing the impact of rising fuel costs would necessitate a significant fare increase, we have opted for a smaller fuel charge to lessen the financial burden on our customers."

On March 10, both Air India and Air India Express also announced similar fuel surcharges on their tickets.
