As the Commonwealth Games unfold in Glasgow, the focus has shifted to India's strategic multi-year sports plan, particularly with Ahmedabad being chosen to host the centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030.

Praise for India's Sports Strategy

Katie Sadleir, CEO of Commonwealth Sport, commended India's rising profile as a global sports hub. She emphasized the country's long-term strategy for major sporting events and shared her discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is deeply committed to utilizing sports for national health and development. Sadleir remarked, "During an international conference, PM Modi articulated his vision for the nation's health and the role of sports in uplifting the populace of India."

Sadleir also recognized India's aspirations on the global sports stage, including its bid for the 2036 Olympic Games. She described the domestic sports infrastructure as "world-class," which will provide an outstanding platform for athletes and spectators. "India is clearly aiming to host the Olympics in the future, and with several major events lined up, the existing facilities are exceptional. This transformation will showcase India's emergence as a global sports power," she concluded.

Preparations Underway for the 2030 Games

To oversee logistics and infrastructure for the 2030 centenary Games, a special administrative team from India is present at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, led by Gujarat's Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi. This follows earlier high-level meetings when Commonwealth Sport President Dr. Donald Rukare visited Gujarat to evaluate potential competition venues and engage with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar.

The International Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed Ahmedabad as the host for the 2030 centenary Games last November, marking a significant milestone 100 years after the inaugural Games in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. With major events and infrastructure development already in progress, sports authorities are optimistic that this landmark event will solidify India's status as a leading global sports power. The 2030 Commonwealth Games are anticipated to enhance India's sports infrastructure and support its ambitions to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
