Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh), Jul 18: India has successfully launched its first privately developed orbital rocket, Vikram-1, which placed several technology demonstration payloads and postcards, including one from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, into low Earth orbit.
Named “Mission Aagaman” (meaning arrival), this mission signifies the entry of India's private space sector into the orbital launch arena, led by Skyroot Aerospace. The company declared the mission a "grand success."
Following its ascent, the primary payloads, which included technology demonstrators from Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve, DCubed, and Skyroot's SCOPE, were deployed into a 450 km Low Earth Orbit (LEO) in succession.
The rocket also successfully released a micro-art payload, featuring an 18-karat gold rocket and a handwritten postcard from Prime Minister Modi inscribed with "Vande Mataram," along with postcards from engineers, scientists, and Indian astronauts.

The micro-art payload includes miniature sculptures honoring three pioneers of India's space program: Vikram Sarabhai, Sir CV Raman, and former President APJ Abdul Kalam, created as a tribute to their contributions to India's scientific and space endeavors.
Skyroot Aerospace proudly named its rockets and engines after these influential figures.
During its inaugural flight, the four-stage, seven-storey Vikram-1 rocket lifted off at 12:05 PM on Saturday from the first launch pad, amidst cloudy skies, leaving behind trails of orange smoke and heralding a new chapter for this spaceport.
A "planned hold" due to navigation issues led to a revised launch time of 12:05 PM.
The engineering data gathered during this test flight will be analyzed to validate guidance and navigation systems, aiding future enhancements for commercial satellite missions, according to Skyroot Aerospace.
With this mission, Skyroot Aerospace has successfully showcased its orbital launch capabilities, advancing beyond the suborbital flight achieved by its Vikram-S mission in 2022.
The successful flight confirmed the performance of the rocket's all-carbon composite structure and 3D-printed engines in a real flight environment, features the company claims are a "first."
Both founders, Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, former ISRO scientists, were present at the space agency's Mission Control Center (MCC), along with its chief V Narayanan.
Prime Minister Modi described this initiative as "a historic new frontier" for India's space exploration.
"A historic new frontier for India's space journey! At 11:30 AM today, Skyroot Aerospace will undertake the maiden orbital launch of Vikram-1, India's first privately developed launch vehicle," Modi stated on social media.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also praised Skyroot Aerospace following the launch.
"...That this launch comes exactly 46 years after the launch of India’s pioneering SLV-3 makes it a fitting tribute to the generations of scientists and engineers who laid the foundation for today’s achievements. India is rooting for Team Skyroot," he expressed in a social media post.
