Group B Draw for AFC U20 Asian Cup Qualifiers

The Indian U20 men's football team has been placed in Group B alongside Uzbekistan, Syria, and Bangladesh for the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 Qualifiers. This announcement was made following the draw held at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Thursday.

Uzbekistan will serve as the host for Group B, with matches scheduled to take place in Tashkent from August 25 to September 6, 2026, using a centralized single round-robin format.

Overview of the New Competition Format

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has outlined a new two-phase system for the AFC youth competitions, which includes a promotion and relegation mechanism. In the Qualification Phase, 32 teams are split into eight groups of four. The group winners and the seven best second-placed teams will progress to the 43rd AFC U20 Asian Cup, while the six lowest-ranked fourth-placed teams will be relegated to the Development Phase for the next edition.

In the Development Phase, 12 teams will be divided into three groups of four, with the top three teams from each group moving up to the Qualification Phase for the subsequent tournament.

India's Historical Context and Aspirations

Team seeding was determined based on performances from the last three editions (2018, 2023, 2025) and the total number of teams participating. The Blue Colts, currently ranked 20th, were placed in Pot 3 for the Qualification Phase.

India is striving to qualify for the AFC U20 Asian Cup for the first time since 2006, when they hosted the event. Their best achievement in the tournament was being joint champions with Iran in 1974. In the last edition (2025), the Blue Colts narrowly missed qualification due to goal difference.
