India's Telecom Sector Welcomes National Frequency Allocation Plan 2025
Telecom Industry's Positive Response to NFAP 2025
New Delhi, Dec 31: The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has expressed its approval of the government's recent announcement regarding the National Frequency Allocation Plan (NFAP) 2025. The organization views this initiative as a progressive step that aligns India's spectrum management with global trends and the increasing demands of digital communication.
In their statement, COAI commended the Department of Telecommunications for its strategic approach, highlighting that the new framework demonstrates the government's recognition of the vital role that spectrum plays in the future of mobile networks and the digital economy.
One of the significant aspects of NFAP 2025 is the allocation of the 6425–7125 MHz band for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT). COAI noted that this decision greatly enhances the availability of mid-band spectrum, which is essential for the growth of 5G, 5G Advanced, and future 6G networks in India.
Furthermore, COAI emphasized that this allocation sends a strong message to global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and other nations, fostering the development of a network equipment ecosystem within this frequency band, ultimately leading to more affordable services.
The association believes that this decision will significantly boost the availability of mid-band spectrum, facilitating the rollout of advanced mobile services across the country.
COAI pointed out that mid-band spectrum is crucial for providing users with fast, high-capacity, and dependable mobile broadband services.
Additionally, the organization reiterated its ongoing request for the identification of the remaining 500 MHz spectrum in the 5925–6425 MHz range for IMT purposes. They argue that this is essential considering India's unique market dynamics, such as high population density, increasing mobile data consumption, and relatively low fixed broadband access.
Lt Gen Dr S.P. Kochhar, the Director General of COAI, stated that the industry is dedicated to collaborating closely with the government and other stakeholders to achieve these goals.
