India's T20I Series Against Afghanistan: Bumrah's Fitness Update and Backup Plans
Bumrah's Fitness Assessment Ahead of T20I Series
India's upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, commencing on September 15, has gained clarity as Jasprit Bumrah has reportedly been deemed 'clinically fit' by the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. However, he must first complete match-simulation tests scheduled from September 4 to September 9.
As per reports, alongside Bumrah, players Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Harshit Rana will also undergo these evaluations before the team gathers in New Delhi on Thursday. This strategy aims to provide selectors and management with concrete data regarding player readiness prior to final approval.
Prince Yadav as a Backup Option
With India awaiting a definitive update on Bumrah ahead of the T20I series and the Asian Games, national selectors have identified Prince Yadav as a potential backup. This decision underscores the necessity for thorough fitness checks during a busy September.
Bumrah has been sidelined since July due to an injury sustained during the second ODI against England in Cardiff. His return is being approached cautiously, considering both white-ball and red-ball formats.
Match Simulations Scheduled by CoE
A source revealed that the BCCI medical team at the CoE had previously informed selectors that these four players were clinically fit but required assessment through practice matches.
The CoE has organized a series of competitive scenarios from September 4 to 9, expressing confidence that the players will be ready for the Afghanistan series.
Final Preparations Before T20I Series
The simulations will conclude just before the squad's assembly in New Delhi on Thursday, allowing for a final medical and performance evaluation before the T20Is commence on September 15.
Selectors are also keeping options open for any last-minute issues. Prince Yadav, who debuted in the ODI series against Afghanistan in June, has been marked as a backup. After recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during the second T20I against Zimbabwe, he has been cleared by the CoE and is available for selection. His impressive performance in T20Is since this year's IPL has made him a promising prospect for the future.
Bumrah's Future in First-Class Matches
In addition to immediate white-ball responsibilities, the management is keen for Bumrah to gain experience in a first-class match before the Test series in New Zealand. He has not participated in a red-ball game since the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati last November, a situation the selectors are eager to address carefully.
The source emphasized the importance of ensuring that Bumrah's knee can withstand the demands of a first-class match before he participates in a Test in New Zealand.
The upcoming simulations from September 4 to 9 will be crucial in determining how quickly Bumrah, Reddy, Sundar, and Rana can be cleared for the Afghanistan T20Is, with further decisions regarding Prince Yadav's role and Bumrah's preparation for red-ball cricket to follow.
