India's T20 World Cup 2026 Preparations: Captain Suryakumar Yadav Updates on Washington Sundar's Injury
Injury Update on Washington Sundar
As the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 approaches, India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav announced on Thursday that the team will not be hasty in finding a replacement for the injured Washington Sundar.
Sundar experienced significant discomfort in his lower rib area while bowling during the first ODI against New Zealand at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara on January 11. Following this, he underwent scans and a consultation with a specialist, which confirmed a side strain and recommended a few days of rest. Sundar, who is included in the squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, also missed the recent five-match T20I series against New Zealand.
"We will be patient with Washington; we don't want to rush into replacements," Suryakumar stated during the Captain's Day press conference leading up to the T20 World Cup.
Suryakumar Commends Coach Gambhir
The Indian captain praised head coach Gautam Gambhir for fostering a supportive and positive atmosphere within the team, expressing confidence in India's performance as they head into the tournament.
"It's been fantastic since he took charge," Suryakumar remarked about Gambhir. "He prioritizes the team's needs over personal achievements. During our match in Trivandrum, Ishan Kishan reached his century with a six. We encourage our players to play freely."
Suryakumar emphasized the importance of allowing players to express themselves, indicating that this management style has enabled the team to play with greater confidence.
India's Strength and Group A Overview
Reflecting on the team's current form, Suryakumar noted that while India appears strong, they must remain cautious of other competitors. "Given our recent performances, we seem to be the favorites, but there are 19 other teams to consider," he stated.
He also expressed contentment with regaining his form, saying, "I’m pleased to be back in rhythm," as India aims to gain momentum in the tournament.
Group A Composition and Team India Roster
