India's Selection Dilemma: Nitish Kumar Reddy vs. Shardul Thakur for Upcoming Tests

India's Challenge in Finalizing the Playing XI

As India prepares for the crucial Test matches in England, the team faces a significant challenge in determining its final playing combination. The competition for a spot in the starting eleven for the first Test at Headingley on June 20 is particularly intense between Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur.

Mixed Performances in Unofficial Tests

Both Nitish and Shardul participated in the playing XI for India A during two unofficial Tests against the England Lions, where their performances yielded mixed results.

Nitish Reddy's Role and Struggles

Nitish primarily served as a batting all-rounder, a role he excelled in during his debut Test series against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he played all five matches.

However, his adaptation to English conditions has been challenging. He struggled with bounce and seam movement, particularly evident in his first innings at Canterbury, where he attempted a cut shot too early and aggressively.

In his second innings, he managed to score a half-century, but by then, the match's outcome was already determined, with part-time bowlers taking over.

Nitish's main issue has been dealing with seam movement. In Northampton, he faced difficulties against Tom Haines, a part-time medium pacer. Unlike in Australia, where he played aggressively regardless of the situation, the overcast conditions and grassy pitches in England have posed significant challenges for the 22-year-old.

His bowling also seemed ineffective, with batters scoring runs off him, and his average speed remained at 70mph, which he needs to improve.

Shardul Thakur's Experience in England

In contrast, Shardul brings valuable experience, having played four of his eleven Tests in England. Although his pace is similar to Nitish's, he has been able to generate more seam movement, consistently troubling the England Lions batters.

During the match in Canterbury, Shardul bowled 28 overs, nearly double the amount bowled by Nitish, and took two wickets.

In 2021, Shardul played a crucial role in India's success during the series in England, contributing as the fifth bowling option and proving effective with the bat. As the series approaches, both players must refine their skills to secure their places in the team.
