India's Position on Participation in 2027 South Asian Games in Pakistan
Clarification from the Ministry of External Affairs
On Tuesday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) provided clarity on India's involvement in the upcoming 2027 South Asian Federation (SAF) Games, which will take place in Pakistan. The MEA emphasized that decisions regarding participation will adhere to the guidelines established by national sports policies and international governing bodies.
In response to inquiries about India's travel to Pakistan for this regional sporting event, MEA Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the existing protocols set by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. He stated, "India's involvement in any international government or multilateral championship is governed by the recent policy announced by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs." Jaiswal further noted that the interests of Indian athletes and the directives from international sports organizations will play a crucial role in these decisions.
India's Sports Policy Regarding Pakistan
In May 2026, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports made it clear that bilateral sporting engagements between India and Pakistan would not resume. However, athletes from both countries are still allowed to compete in multilateral international tournaments. A memorandum sent to the Indian Olympic Association, Sports Authority of India, and National Sports Federations indicated that India's sports policy reflects its broader diplomatic relations with Pakistan.
The new guidelines establish key parameters for India's sporting interactions and aspirations for hosting international events. Indian teams will not travel to Pakistan for bilateral series, and Pakistani teams will not be allowed to play bilateral matches in India. Nevertheless, athletes from both nations can participate in global or regional multilateral events, including those held in India, ensuring that they are not penalized in international rankings due to geopolitical issues.
Visa Facilitation for International Sports Personnel
To enhance India's appeal as a host for global sporting events, the government is streamlining the visa process for international athletes, technical staff, and team officials. Officials from International Sports Governing Bodies will qualify for priority multi-entry visas valid for up to five years, along with guaranteed diplomatic protocol during their visits to India.
This dual approach allows India to maintain a strong stance on bilateral diplomacy while remaining integrated into the global sports administrative framework. The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs' clarification comes at a time of heightened sensitivity in India-Pakistan relations, coinciding with Operation Sindoor, initiated on May 7 last year in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians.
Details of the 2027 South Asian Games
Pakistan is scheduled to host the 2027 South Asian Games from April 3 to 11, with events taking place in Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar. The South Asia Olympic Council (SAOC) approved the dates and venues during a recent meeting in Islamabad. Initially set for 2021, the Games have faced numerous delays over the past six years, including interruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was rescheduled multiple times before finally being set for April 2027.
The approved host cities include Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar, with representatives from Bangladesh, the Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka attending the meeting. India holds the record as the most successful nation in the history of the South Asian Games, boasting an impressive total of 2,378 medals, which includes 1,263 gold, 736 silver, and 379 bronze medals.
