Grand Send-Off for Indian Para Contingent
On Monday, the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) hosted an impressive Send-Off Ceremony for the 28-member para contingent chosen to represent India at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, commencing on July 23. This group of para athletes is part of the larger Indian Olympic Association (IOA) team, which includes both able-bodied and para athletes.
Ceremony Highlights
The event was attended by notable figures such as Gaurav Gautam, Haryana's Sports Minister; Devendra Jhajharia, President of the Paralympic Committee of India; and Payal Kanodia, the newly appointed Chairperson of PCI and M3M Foundation. The gathering also included senior officials from the PCI, National Sports Federation Presidents, coaches, athletes, and media representatives.
Details of the Indian Para Contingent
All 28 para athletes, along with their coaches and support staff, were present at the ceremony, marking a significant send-off before their journey to Glasgow. The contingent will compete in five disciplines: para athletics (11 athletes), para powerlifting (7), para swimming (5), para track cycling (1), and women's wheelchair basketball (3x3) (4 athletes).

The Indian para contingent is determined to exceed the previous Commonwealth Games medal tally, aiming for a historic performance in Glasgow. Over the last two decades, India's para sports movement has flourished, with athletes achieving remarkable success at various international competitions. Since debuting in the Commonwealth Games in 2002, Indian para athletes have secured seven medals, including one gold, two silver, and four bronze.
