India's Challenge at the Orleans Masters 2026

The Orleans Masters 2026 concluded for India on Saturday, as young badminton players Tanvi Sharma and Isharani Baruah faced defeats in their women's singles semi-finals held at the Palais des Sports.

Tanvi Sharma's Semi-Final Match

In her semi-final match, Tanvi Sharma, who earned a silver medal at the World Junior Championships, was defeated by Japan's Nozomi Okuhara, a former Olympic bronze medalist. The match ended in straight games with scores of 21-9, 21-16, lasting 35 minutes, as reported by Olympics.com.

The 17-year-old struggled to find her rhythm in the first game, falling behind 11-6 at the mid-game break. Okuhara maintained her lead and closed the game comfortably. In the second game, Tanvi improved her performance, matching Okuhara until the score reached 12-all, but the experienced Japanese player elevated her game at critical moments to secure her place in the final.

Despite the defeat, this was Tanvi's second semi-final appearance at a BWF Super 300 event, highlighting her swift ascent in international badminton. She previously made headlines by finishing as the runner-up at the 2025 US Open, becoming the youngest Indian woman to reach a BWF World Tour final at just 16.

Isharani Baruah's Semi-Final Battle

Isharani Baruah also faced elimination in her semi-final match, losing in straight games to Thailand's Pitchamon Opatniputh. The world No. 52 player was defeated with scores of 21-12, 23-21 against the 27th-ranked Thai competitor.

Baruah struggled to counter Opatniputh's control in the first game, which the Thai player dominated. However, she made a strong effort in the second game, initially taking a 10-5 lead. Opatniputh fought back to take a 13-10 lead, and the match became tense as Baruah saved a match point to push the score to deuce. Ultimately, Opatniputh maintained her composure in the final moments to clinch the victory and advance to the final.

With both players exiting in the semi-finals, India's campaign at the tournament ended without securing a title.
