India's Online Food Delivery Sector Poised for Rapid Growth

India's online food delivery sector is on the brink of a major transformation, with projections indicating a potential market growth from $9.1 billion in 2024 to $27 billion by 2030. This surge is fueled by changing consumer habits, particularly among younger demographics, and the increasing influence of smaller cities. Despite the current low share of online orders compared to global standards, advancements in technology and organized sectors are paving the way for a more robust market. As digital habits evolve and accessibility improves, the future looks promising for India's food delivery landscape.

A New Era for Food Delivery in India

The online food delivery industry in India is entering a significant growth phase. According to a report by Investec Equities, the expansion of this sector will not only rely on attracting new users but also on the frequency of orders and the increasing accessibility in smaller towns.

Market Expected to Triple by 2030

The report indicates that India's online food delivery market could rise from approximately $9.1 billion in 2024 to nearly $27 billion by 2030. This translates to an annual growth rate of around 19%, driven by digital adoption and urbanization.

Low Share of Online Ordering

India's total food service market has expanded from ₹4 lakh crore in FY20 to ₹7 lakh crore in FY25, with projections suggesting it could reach ₹1112 lakh crore by FY30. Despite this growth, the share of online and dine-out orders remains only 13%, significantly lower than in countries like the USA and China.

Changing Lifestyles Fueling Demand

Factors such as smaller family sizes, longer working hours, and urban migration are encouraging people to dine out or order food online more frequently. This trend is particularly pronounced among the youth and working professionals.

Emerging Growth from Smaller Cities

While metro and large cities still account for 75-80% of the market, tier-2 and smaller towns have contributed up to 25%. These areas are becoming a significant foundation for the next wave of growth in the sector.

Impact of Organized Sector and Technology

The share of the organized sector is rapidly increasing due to branded restaurants, cloud kitchens, and improved delivery networks. Additionally, the rise in smartphone usage and internet access has made ordering food even more convenient.

Anticipating Further Acceleration

Currently, individuals in India order food an average of 35 times a month, which is lower than in developed nations. However, there is a strong likelihood that both the number of orders and average spending will increase in the future. With limited access, growing digital habits, and participation from smaller towns, India's food delivery market could become one of the fastest-growing globally in the coming years.
