The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has instructed Meta to modify its algorithms to prevent the spread of deepfakes, propaganda, and other manipulated or illegal content on its platform. Officials have requested the company to submit a detailed roadmap for compliance with these regulations, emphasizing the need to strengthen content moderation and expedite the process of removing content upon requests from authorized agencies, while also adhering to India's data localization requirements.
Collaboration for Improved Detection
According to a report citing sources, the government expects Meta to collaborate more effectively with authorities to enhance the detection and removal of deepfakes, altered images, and misleading posts. This directive follows recent discussions between MeitY and Meta amid increasing scrutiny over AI-generated harmful and manipulated content. During a meeting on Friday, Meta's technical team provided insights into their current systems for identifying and addressing online harmful content.

Officials emphasized the need for specific algorithm changes to reduce the dissemination of propaganda, deepfakes, and manipulated media.
