A Thrilling Day Ahead for Indian Athletes

On Monday, India gears up for an exciting medal chase as the men's cricket team kicks off its Asian Games 2026 journey. Notable athletes like Avinash Sable, Lovlina Borgohain, and Manu Bhaker are set to compete, aiming to boost the nation's medal count on Day 9 of this prestigious event.

After concluding Day 8 with a total of 37 medals—comprising four gold, 16 silver, and 17 bronze—India's men's cricket team will enter the quarter-finals against Afghanistan at Korogi Athletic Park. As the defending champions, India seeks to maintain its winning streak after triumphing over Afghanistan in the finals three years ago.

Athletics: A Goldmine of Opportunities

The athletics segment promises multiple medal chances for India, with nine finals featuring Indian competitors scheduled for the evening. Avinash Sable, returning from a lengthy injury hiatus, will be a key figure in the 3000m steeplechase, aiming for a podium finish.

In the men's javelin throw, Yash Vir Singh and Rohit Yadav will represent India, hoping to continue the nation's gold-medal legacy in this event, previously dominated by Neeraj Chopra. Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga and Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem are expected to be strong contenders.

Additionally, Murali Sreeshankar and David Patturaj Solomon will compete in the men's long jump, while Gulveer Singh and Parul Chaudhary will participate in the 1500m and women's 5000m, respectively. Both athletes have already secured medals in the ongoing Games. The athletics lineup also includes the women's discus throw, men's and women's 400m hurdles, and the women's 4x100m relay.

Boxing: Lovlina Borgohain's Medal Quest

In the boxing arena, Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain is set to face Seong Suyeon from the Republic of Korea in the women's 75kg quarter-finals. A win here would guarantee her a medal. Additionally, Priya Ghanghas and Kapil Pokhariya are also on the brink of securing podium finishes.

Shooting, Squash, and Archery Highlights

In shooting, Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh, and Rahi Sarnobat will compete in the women's 25m pistol qualification, with Manu aiming for an individual medal in her final Games appearance.

The squash competition transitions to team events, where singles finalists Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh will look to recover from their silver medal outcomes.

Indian archers will also showcase their skills in individual compound events, with Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Chikitha Taniparthi in the women's category, while Sahil Jadhav and Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru will represent in the men's.

Hockey and Other Competitions

In hockey, the Indian men's team is set to clash with Bangladesh in their final Pool A match. Pincky Balhara will compete in kurash, while volleyball and tennis events will also see Indian athletes in action.

With a packed schedule featuring athletics, boxing, and shooting, India aims to replicate its success from Sunday, where it secured seven medals.
