India's Lifeline: Sending More Aid to Flood-Hit Nepal Amid Rising Casualties

New Delhi: On Wednesday, India sent its fifth shipment of crucial medical supplies, weighing over five tonnes, to assist Nepal, which has been severely affected by recent flooding. An 11-member rescue team accompanied the shipment.

The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal has tragically surpassed 1,000, as rescue teams continue to recover bodies from the impacted regions, according to reports from Nepalese officials.

Emergency responders have successfully rescued more than 12,000 individuals, but approximately 4,000 people are still unaccounted for as search and rescue efforts persist.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced on social media, "The fifth Indian aircraft has taken off for Nepal, carrying an 11-member rescue team equipped with specialized tools and 5.5 tonnes of essential medicines."

In total, India has provided Nepal with 68.5 tonnes of relief supplies thus far.

Additionally, New Delhi dispatched a team of medical professionals and paramedics, along with a technical unit equipped for search and rescue operations.

The initial batch of relief supplies was sent just hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi communicated with his Nepalese counterpart, Balendra Shah, on August 26, the day the floods struck the Himalayan nation.

Modi assured Shah of India's commitment to providing all necessary humanitarian support to address the crisis.

Local authorities report that the floods have caused significant damage, affecting 35 motorable bridges, 45 suspension bridges, and 40 kilometers of paved roads, primarily in central Nepal.
