India's IT Sector Urged to Capitalize on Semiconductor Opportunities
Minister Highlights Semiconductor Workforce Shortage
During a discussion with IT sector representatives in Hyderabad, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, pointed out a significant global shortage of approximately one million professionals in the semiconductor industry. He encouraged the nation's IT sector to seize this substantial opportunity.
Current Developments in India's Semiconductor Industry
The minister elaborated that due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focused efforts on the semiconductor sector, there are currently 12 plants operating at various stages across the country. Notably, three of these facilities have already commenced chip production, with these chips being exported to countries such as Japan, the United States, and Europe.
Potential for Growth in the IT Sector
Vaishnaw expressed confidence that the Indian IT industry could significantly benefit from this opportunity, as local experts are adept at designing and developing entirely new solutions in the electronics and IT fields.
Government Support for Semiconductor Education
To strengthen this industry, the central government has provided cutting-edge semiconductor design tools to 315 universities across the nation. Additionally, electronics have now become the third-largest export category from India, with mobile phones leading in export volume.
