India's ICC World Test Championship Performance Raises Concerns
India's Struggles in the ICC World Test Championship
India's performance in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for 2025-27 has raised alarms, with Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar acknowledging the need for the team to elevate its game to improve its standings and vie for a spot in the finals. During a press conference on Saturday, following the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announcement of squads for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games 2026 squad for Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, Agarkar shared insights on India's recent Test outings.
Agarkar Expresses Concerns
Currently, India holds the third position in the ICC Men's Test Team Rankings, boasting a rating of 104 and a total of 2,600 points. Australia tops the rankings with a rating of 131 and 3,138 points. Addressing the team's performance issues in the longest format, Agarkar stated, "While I wouldn't say worry is the right term, we certainly need to enhance our performances. England played well, and the series against South Africa didn't go as planned, but we still have opportunities ahead if we perform well. We have the talent, but we must improve our gameplay."
India's WTC Campaign Under Review
Agarkar's remarks come as India faces challenges in their WTC campaign, currently sitting sixth in the standings with four wins out of nine matches. In contrast, Australia, the runners-up from the last edition, leads the table with seven victories from eight matches, while defending champions South Africa are in third place with three wins from four matches.
Historical WTC Final Performances
Despite their current ranking, India's WTC campaign is under scrutiny, making upcoming Test matches vital for their chances of reaching the championship final. India finished as runners-up in the first two editions of the WTC in 2021 and 2023, losing the finals to New Zealand and Australia, respectively, at Lord's Cricket Ground in England.
Standalone Test Against Afghanistan
India is presently engaged in a one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh. However, this match does not impact the WTC standings, as Afghanistan is not one of the nine nations participating in the championship. Therefore, this fixture is categorized as a standalone bilateral Test, providing no WTC points for either team.
With several crucial Tests remaining in the cycle, India aims to turn their fortunes around to bolster their chances of making it to the WTC final.
