India to Lead First Youth Delegation at SCO Delphic Games

The upcoming Modern Pythian Games is poised to create a significant chapter in global cultural history as India prepares to send its inaugural Youth Team of artists to the 1st Youth Delphic Games, representing the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Member Nations.

This marks the first time an Indian team of artists will officially represent the nation as a national delegation, similar to international sports events. A 65-member team is scheduled to depart on March 22, 2026, heading to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, which currently chairs the SCO. The Mayor of Bishkek, in partnership with the International Delphic Committee based in Moscow, is hosting these games, which are inspired by the ancient Pythian Games that celebrated artistic excellence.

Diverse Indian Arts on Display

The delegation will consist of 41 talented young artists, including 21 from Delhi, 10 from Himachal Pradesh, 4 from Karnataka, and one each from Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, and Haryana. They will showcase a variety of artistic disciplines such as folk music, dance, singing, pop music, DJ arts, visual arts, crafts, and piano. This cultural representation aims to highlight the richness of Indian arts and heritage to the SCO Member Nations, paving the way for enhanced cultural diplomacy.

A Significant Diplomatic and Cultural Achievement

India's participation in this event not only marks its entry into the international cultural arena but also grants formal recognition to the Modern Pythian Games among SCO nations, representing a notable diplomatic and cultural achievement. Bijender Goel, a prominent cultural visionary from New Delhi and the founder of the Modern Pythian Games, has been invited to address a special session for SCO Member Nations during the event.

In his speech, Goel will present a visionary approach for reviving the ancient Pythian Games in a modern context through the Modern Pythian Games. He will emphasize the potential of this integrated cultural ecosystem to transform the arts sector into a structured and sustainable industry, contributing over EUR 1,000 billion to the global economy. His address will also highlight the crucial role that India and other SCO nations can play in shaping a new global cultural landscape, promoting youth engagement, cultural exchange, economic growth, and long-term cultural diplomacy.

Leadership and Jury Members

The Indian delegation will be guided by a distinguished group of cultural and administrative leaders, including: * Chief of Mission: B. H. Anilkumar, IAS (Retd.), Karnataka * Deputy Chief of Mission: S. Siva Kumar, Tamil Nadu * Chief Choreographer: Sandip Soparrakar, a well-known Latin and Ballroom dancer and choreographer.

Additionally, it is a point of pride that Sneha Venkatramani, a respected Bharatanatyam Guru from Bengaluru, and Sulbha Joshi, a renowned visual artist from Uttarakhand, have been appointed to the International Jury for the Games.

Reviving the World's Oldest Cultural Games

The Pythian Games, recognized as the oldest cultural games globally, have been revived by Bijender Goel from India as the Modern Pythian Games after a hiatus of 1,630 years. Originally held in Delphi, Greece, these games have historical records dating back to 582 BC. While the Olympic Games, which began in Olympia, Greece, have records from 776 BC and were revived in 1894 after a 1,500-year gap, the Pythian Games encompassed a blend of music, dance, poetry, painting, sculpture, and athletics, unlike the Olympics that focused solely on sports. According to Greek mythology, the Olympic Games were initiated based on the Oracle of Delphi's guidance, with many athletic traditions derived from the Pythian Games.
