Indian Chess at the Esports World Cup

The Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026 will feature an unprecedented representation from India in chess, with four Grandmasters participating in the tournament scheduled for August 11 to 15 in Paris. The lineup includes Grandmasters Nihal Sarin, Aravindh Chithambaram, and Pranesh M, who will represent S8UL Esports, alongside Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi competing for Gen.G Esports. They will vie for a share of the impressive USD 1.5 million (approximately INR 14.2 crore) prize pool.

Historic Participation for Indian Chess

Nihal, Pranesh, and Arjun qualified directly for the Group Stage based on their performances in the Champions Chess Tour (CCT) 2025-2026. Aravindh secured his spot through DreamHack Atlanta earlier this year and will start in the Play-In stage. This year marks a significant achievement for Indian chess at the EWC, as last year only Nihal and Arjun represented the country. Nihal reached the quarterfinals after qualifying through the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ), while Arjun finished fourth after qualifying via the CCT. The number of Indian participants has now doubled, making it the largest contingent from India in the event's history.

New Tournament Structure

The Chess competition at EWC 2026 will return with a revamped two-phase format. The new Play-In stage will include nine players who qualified through the LCQ and DreamHack Atlanta, competing in a double-elimination bracket with two games per match. The top players from this stage will move on to the Group Stage, joining those who qualified directly through the CCT and other events.

The Group Stage will consist of 16 players divided into two groups of eight, each following a double-elimination format with two-game matches. The top four from each group will progress to the Playoffs, which will feature a single-elimination format with four-game quarterfinals and six-game semifinals. The tournament champion will be determined through a Grand Final comprising three sets.

A Competitive Lineup

This year's competition boasts one of the strongest fields in chess history, headlined by defending champion Magnus Carlsen from Team Liquid. He will be joined by notable players such as Hikaru Nakamura and Alireza Firouzja from Team Falcons, Nodirbek Abdusattor of Natus Vincere, and Hans Moke Niemann from GodLike Esports, among other Grandmasters from across the globe.

With four Indian Grandmasters in the mix, the nation aims to build on last year's success and strive for its first EWC Chess title.
