A 'Great Opportunity' Against World Cup Opposition

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, the goalkeeper for India, has labeled the upcoming international friendlies against Panama, Brazil, and Uruguay as a "great opportunity" for the team to challenge themselves against top-tier competition. He emphasized the importance of treating these matches as just games, rather than getting overwhelmed by the significance of the events.

The Blue Tigers are set to face Panama on September 26 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. Following this, they will take on two higher-ranked teams during the international window: Brazil, the five-time world champions, on October 3, and Uruguay, the two-time champions, on October 6, both scheduled to be held in Kolkata.

In a statement, Gurpreet expressed that these matches will help the Indian players assess their standing as a team and as a nation. "This is a fantastic chance for us to measure ourselves against World Cup-level competition, and it’s beneficial for everyone to understand where we stand as a nation and team. This is a significant moment for Indian football," he remarked.

Personal Preparation and Training Intensity

When asked about his preparation for facing world-class attackers from teams like Brazil and Uruguay, Gurpreet mentioned that his routine remains consistent, focusing on fitness, mental sharpness, and rigorous training. "Honestly, I don’t change much. It’s about staying fit and fresh. Being 34 makes it a bit tougher, but I believe in keeping my mind and body ready for the challenges ahead," he explained.

He also pointed out the value of training with high-caliber players at Bengaluru FC, stating that the competitive environment in training helps him gear up for the intensity of international matches. "Training against skilled players pushes you to your limits, which translates into better performance in games. The goal is to replicate that competitive spirit in training, which is challenging but essential," he added.

Play the Game, Not the Occasion

Despite Brazil and Uruguay's illustrious football history and the legends they have produced, Gurpreet stressed that India should not view these fixtures as monumental events. Instead, the focus should be on tactical and physical readiness. "We admire these teams and their players, but as a player, I see this as just another game," he stated.

He insisted that the team must approach the matches with the mindset of competing against 11 players, rather than being intimidated by the names of their opponents. "We need to prepare ourselves accordingly and not treat the game as a grand occasion; we should play it as a game and give our all to make it difficult for them," he said.

"While the occasion is exciting, the focus should be on our tactical, mental, and physical preparation rather than viewing it as a significant event. Our objective is clear: we will play our game and strive to win," he concluded.
