India's Football Team Faces Brazil in Friendly Match: A Learning Experience
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu Reflects on the Match
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, the captain of the Indian football team, expressed immense pride in his teammates' performance during their international friendly against Brazil. He described the experience as 'great' for the Blue Tigers, noting, 'When facing a strong opponent like Brazil, they capitalize on even the smallest mistakes. I am proud of how hard the boys worked, and everyone represented themselves well. We didn't just defend; we attempted to attack as well. This match was a valuable experience, and we have another game coming up.'
Brazil's Commanding 4-0 Win
Ranked sixth globally, Brazil showcased their dominance throughout the match, securing a decisive 4-0 victory at Salt Lake Stadium. The Brazilian team created several chances early on, with Estevao and Vinicius Junior testing India's defense and goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. Despite his efforts to keep Brazil at bay, the visitors broke the deadlock around the 30-minute mark.
Matheuzinho assisted Estevao, who hit the inside of the post from the edge of the box to score. Pedro then struck the woodwork before extending Brazil's lead just before halftime, slipping the ball under Gurpreet after receiving a pass from Estevao.
After the break, Brazil maintained control despite making five substitutions. India posed a brief threat through Ryan Williams and Manvir Singh, but Brazil quickly regained their dominance. India was caught trying to play from the back, allowing Pedro to set up Samuel Lino, who curled a stunning shot into the bottom corner for a 3-0 lead.
Williams nearly scored for India, with one shot cleared off the line and another going wide, but Brazil remained in command. Lino completed his brace deep into stoppage time, cutting inside and beating substitute goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill to finalize the score at 4-0. This result marked Brazil's fifth win in their last six international friendlies, while India continued their winless streak.
AIFF President and Minister Praise the Historic Match
Kalyan Chaubey, president of the All India Football Federation, hailed the match as a significant milestone in India's football journey, emphasizing that the long-term impact of such games will be evident over time. He stated, 'This is just the beginning. To excel in football or any field, it takes about 15 to 20 years of development. The national team has faced challenges due to a lack of opportunities against high-quality opponents, which we are working to change. In 15 or 20 years, when we look back, this match against Brazil will be seen as a pivotal moment in Indian football.'
The match also provided India with a chance to measure themselves against a top-ranked team, with the Blue Tigers showing attacking intent despite the loss. West Bengal Minister Indranil Khan remarked that the atmosphere felt akin to a World Cup match due to the quality of the event's organization. 'The coordination among the government, administration, and police was commendable. History was made today as Brazil's full national team played against India on our soil, and everyone enjoyed the match,' he noted.
Minister Criticizes Previous Government Over Messi Visit
The Minister criticized the former West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee for damaging the state's reputation during Lionel Messi's visit. He stated, 'The previous government's mismanagement during Messi's visit tarnished our reputation due to disorganization and corruption. The youth of West Bengal enjoyed the India vs. Brazil match, and those who couldn't attend were still thrilled. The people have chosen to support sports and elevate India's status on the global stage.'
India is set to face two-time FIFA World Cup champions Uruguay in another international friendly at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) in Kolkata on Tuesday, October 6.
