India's First Bullet Train Set to Launch by August 2027
Bullet Train Project Progress
The inaugural high-speed bullet train in India is scheduled to commence operations in August 2027. Significant progress is being made on the bullet train project, which will connect Ahmedabad and Mumbai. This train will cover a distance of 508 kilometers in just 2 hours and 50 minutes, with 21 kilometers of the route running underground, including a section beneath the sea. Operating the train at a speed of 250 km/h at a depth of 213 feet underwater presents considerable challenges, necessitating the construction of a tunnel. The project will benefit from the advanced 'Maha Machine' imported from China.
Maha Machine Arrives from China
To facilitate the underwater tunnel construction for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR), a specialized tunnel boring machine (TBM) has been brought in from China. This machine, designed by a German company, has arrived at Mumbai Port and is crucial for boring the underwater section of the route, which spans 21 kilometers.
Significance of the Maha Machine
The TBM, with a diameter of 13.65 meters, will be utilized for the first time in an Indian rail project. For comparison, typical metro tunnel boring machines have diameters ranging from 5 to 6 meters. The machine arrived in parts and will require at least 90 days for assembly, necessitating over 150 trucks for transportation to the site.
Underwater Tunnel Specifications
According to Achal Khare, Managing Director of the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the underwater tunnel will extend 7 kilometers beneath Thane Creek, with depths ranging from 25 to 65 meters (82 to 213 feet) below sea level.
Features of the TBM
This TBM from China is designed to operate with minimal vibration and noise while efficiently excavating the ground. In addition to cutting and boring, it will also manage debris removal and reinforce the tunnel with concrete.
Bullet Train Launch Timeline
As per the Ministry of Railways, the first bullet train in India is expected to be operational by August 15, 2027, initially running between Surat and the Bilimora section in Gujarat.
Project Cost Overview
The estimated cost for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project was initially set at ₹1.1 lakh crore, which has since escalated to approximately ₹1.98 lakh crore.
