Historic Milestone in Transportation Infrastructure

On Thursday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced a significant achievement for India's transportation infrastructure, revealing that the country's inaugural bullet train is scheduled to commence operations on August 15, 2027. This groundbreaking project, spanning 508 kilometers between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, promises to revolutionize inter-city travel, drastically reducing travel times and introducing world-class high-speed rail standards in India.

Operational Details of the High-Speed Corridor

The initial operations of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor will cover a 100-kilometer stretch from Surat to Vapi in Gujarat. Services on the remaining route will be rolled out in phases. Initially, there were plans to operate a 50-kilometer segment between Surat and Bilimora within the same timeframe. In an update provided to the Lok Sabha in July, Vaishnaw mentioned that the train is expected to be operational by December 2027.

Speed and Route Information

This train will be the fastest in India, covering the distance of 508 kilometers between Mumbai and Ahmedabad at a speed of 308 kilometers per hour, completing the journey in just two hours and seven minutes. Once fully operational, the entire route will be traversed in two hours and 17 minutes. The train will start from Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Maharashtra and travel to Sabarmati in Gujarat, making 12 stops including Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, and Ahmedabad.

Collaboration with Japan

The foundation stone for this ambitious project was laid in 2017, with a target completion date set for December 2023. India is also collaborating with Japan to enhance its transportation infrastructure. This collaboration was a focal point during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba in August 2025.
