India's Fielding Challenges Ahead of T20 World Cup Semi-Final Against England
Concerns Over Fielding Performance
Morne Morkel, the bowling coach for India, has pointed out the team's ongoing difficulties with fielding during the T20 World Cup. He acknowledged that misfielding has cost the team approximately 15-20 runs in various matches. Despite these challenges, Morkel is concentrating on the upcoming semi-final against England in Mumbai, avoiding discussions about previous performances.
Issues with Catching and Fielding
India's struggles in the field have been evident throughout the tournament, with a catching success rate of just 71.7%, the lowest among the Super 8 teams. In a crucial match against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, the team missed several key opportunities. Notably, Abhishek Sharma dropped an easy catch during the fifth over, which could have led to the dismissal of Roston Chase. Additionally, he failed to secure another catch in the penultimate over that could have dismissed Rovman Powell.
Morkel's Insights on Improvement
"Fielding is a topic we frequently discuss. At times, we find ourselves giving away 15-20 runs due to our fielding errors. This is an area we continuously work on, encouraging players to elevate their performance. If we can position the right players effectively, we should be able to secure those catches," Morkel shared with the media.
Looking Ahead to the Match Against England
"Every game offers lessons and opportunities for growth, but as we prepare for this match, we aim to avoid over-analyzing past performances. Our focus is solely on the upcoming challenge, and we need to perform at our peak to secure a victory against England," Morkel emphasized.
India has now recorded a total of 13 dropped catches in this tournament, the highest among all teams. The defending champions are set to face England, who have won the T20 World Cup twice, in the second semi-final at the renowned Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.
