India's Fencing Team Announced for Asian Games 2023
National Fencing Squad Selected for Asian Games
The Fencing Association of India (FAI) has officially revealed the national team that will represent India at the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. The selected athletes are scheduled to gather at the Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala for a preparatory camp from September 1 to September 15, before heading to Aichi-Nagoya on September 16 for final acclimatization ahead of the competition.
Selection Process and Key Athletes
The squad was determined by the FAI selection committee, which evaluated athletes based on their national rankings and performances in significant international events, including the Asian Senior Fencing Championships, World Fencing Championships, and Commonwealth Fencing Championships.
A highlight of the team is the return of CA Bhavani Devi, a leading fencer who will spearhead the women's sabre category after a two-month break from competition, having previously participated in the Asian Senior Fencing Championships earlier this year.
Strong Representation Across Categories
The Indian fencing team showcases impressive momentum across all weapon categories, following a remarkable year on the international stage. In the Epee category, Taniksha Khatri and Prachi Lohan are set to lead the women's team after their notable performances at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships, where they secured gold and bronze medals, respectively.
Karan Singh Gurjar's gold medal in Men's Sabre at the Commonwealth Championships enhances India's chances for podium finishes, while Tejas Patil's historic bronze in Men's Foil marks a significant achievement as the first senior medal for an Indian fencer in this category.

FAI Leadership Expresses Optimism
Rajeev Mehta, the Secretary General of the Fencing Association of India, expressed strong confidence in the team's preparation and capabilities. He stated, "Our fencers have shown remarkable growth and resilience on the global stage in recent years. This squad represents our finest talent across foil, epee, and sabre. With Bhavani Devi's return and the historic performances of Tejas Patil, Taniksha Khatri, Prachi, and Karan Singh Gurjar, we have one of the strongest contingents in Indian fencing history. The upcoming camp at NIS Patiala is aimed at refining their skills, enhancing tactical endurance, and fostering team cohesion before they travel to Aichi-Nagoya on September 16. We are dedicated to providing our athletes with top-notch support, and we believe they will bring pride to the nation at the Asian Games."
The FAI also expressed gratitude to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) for their ongoing support in organizing the preparatory camp and promoting the national fencing program.
